Goal Setting

Goal Setting is an Art

Last week we hosted our goals teleseminar and the feedback was incredible! If you were not able to catch the live program it is available at the link below.

www.universityofyou.ca/GoalsRecording

With all the amazing reaction we have gathered from this program, we are even more excited for our tele-forum which we are hosting on October 30th at 7:00pm EST! One cannot contest the value of visioning and setting objective goals in one’s pursuit of achievement and thus happiness.

Unlike the teleseminar, this program will include a tremendous amount of listener participation. It will allow each participant to listen to the thoughts, strategies and ideas of all the callers so that we can foster an environment of directly applicable education. Together, we address every issue you might have in order to allow a renewed understanding of YOUR vision and goals. During the tele-forum, we will not speak in generalities, but instead address each of your individual questions, challenges, etc. The group environment allows us to all learn from each other. There is truly no better method to significantly impact your life than listening to the words and experiences of others.

In addition to the tele-forum you will receive:

  • Access to recording of the fully packed Tele-forum with activities that will create clarity and get you moving towards reaching your goals
  • Class worksheets and homework activities to keep your momentum rolling
  • A group coaching call the following week to continue to support your next step in your Goal Setting Challenge
  • NEW clients only Monday Morning Power Hour Group that will be held the week after the group coaching call to continue the momentum even longer

S-M-A-R-T!

When you ask people about setting goals, they seem to be in either one camp or the other – they either do it or they don’t.

One of the reasons that people don’t like setting goals is because more often then not, their goals never come to be, so they just have resolved that setting goals may work for everyone else, but not for them.

There is no doubt that setting goals is one of the best things you can do to make positive changes in your life. But there is a strategy to setting goals in a way that will better insure your success – you have to do it S-M-A-R-T.

S-M-A-R-T is an acronym to follow that will help you create goals that have more substance and a better chance of it coming to fruition.

Setting S-M-A-R-T goals means to make them Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely. You define them clearly with a realistic, yet challenging, quantifiable, achievable, and time bound plan. Go back and look at your goals and be sure to make them S-M-A-R-T.

Man washing dishes

Man washing dishes (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Remember the times when the teacher did roll call in class and the answer after your name was called was “present”? You were fairly present at the moment you heard your name. I don’t know about you, I was somewhere else for most of high school.

Today BEing present actually shows up by participating in the moment you are in, completely. Multi-tasking be damned, just doing one thing at a time and not wandering off in body or mind to another task, problem or issue. This is not always easy, but possible.

Are you willing to practice? Start with doing a mundane chore like the dishes or sweeping the floor. While you are doing it concentrate on the actual washing/sweeping. “Get the corners.” “Flip the dish and scrub that spot”. How long before you were thinking about dealing with the kids or heading out to do other chores or maybe even adding another task while you are doing this one, like calling a friend or checking your email?

Caught you! I knew it, lots of you are like me! HA! When I want to let go of the turmoil in my head or the dreaded to-do list, I start by thinking I just want to BE. My to-BE at the moment is just to wash the dishes and when other things filter in, I note it then clear my mind to the task at hand.

It is really incredibly relaxing to do only one thing at a time. Meditative even. When did we get so busy? Why do we think that if we are only done ONE thing we must be lazy or inefficient?

Life is short and we ALL need to slow down a bit and just BE. This IS the good life and “Life is too short to be anything but happy!”

Time…how is it treating you?

Does time get away from you? Is there enough time in your day…your Life? Do you do the things you really want to do? Is your time filled with other peoples priorities? Is there just too much to do in the 24 hours of your day? Is it all you can do to not pull the blankets over your head because your day is already overwhelming and you have not even put your feet on the floor yet?

I used to feel overwhelmed every day. I said “yes” before thinking about what I was saying “no” to. This left me with resentment, exhaustion and completely overwhelmed. In the end no time left for me or what was important to me. What energy could I possibly have left to enjoy what was important to me? NONE!

Have you taken some time recently to do absolutely nothing? Spending it wistfully waiting for the calm in your mind? Listening to your breath? Slowly coming to the present moment…the moment when it is only the stillness of your body and mind in sync with that particular moment of time. Sitting comfortable or maybe laying on the floor or on a blanket on the ground under a tree. Breathe in through your nose, to the count of 4 – hold for a count of 4, blow out through your mouth to the count of 4. Again…and again…

Is it not working yet? Keep going – until you feel the little hair on your top lip move from the in breath and the air over your lips on the out. Until you feel the inhale deep in the lower parts of your lungs as it expands on every breath in and drops on the exhale. This may not be easy but it is simple – awareness – thoughtfulness. When you finally get the hang of it you can enjoy the peace of that moment and notice what enters your mind. Acknowledge it and set it free coming back to counting every time.

When you feel fully relaxed you may open your eyes and notice what is around you. Your ability to focus sharpens through this process so things you see will seem brighter and clearer. Ideas will be quite vivid and formed. You can feel clearly connected to your intuition within this space.

I was quite amazed how I felt at first! The true calmness of my mind was unexpected. My body was relaxed but I had not experience such quiet in my head…not gerbils running amok on the wheels in my head. I needed more of this feeling, but it took many times and some years before my mind emptied so regularly I had to check in to be sure that it was still working! It worked overtime for decades!

This practice allowed me to figure out what was important to me. How was I going to simplify so that I could live in a way that was in line with what I wanted…not what the rest of the world seemed to want from me. I needed the peace in my head to give me space to hear what the Universe, my Higher Power or God had in store for me. My ideas were not working so well so I needed to learn how to turn ME off. Decisions come easier, as well. This practice was a great start to that process. It gave me…time. I gratefully took it.

I believe that anyone can learn how to do this. I am sure that some of you are masters at this, I am still a novice to be sure. I am not a silent retreat person, although I have heard of people who go on these retreats for up to ten days! I am not ready for that but I can sit and read for an entire day under the umbrella on the back deck only occasionally talking to my dog, Max. Looking up to watch the bird at the feeder two feet away or a bee collecting pollen from the flowers just beyond my knees can give me an incredible moment of delight. I can enjoy watching the sheets flap in the wind on the clothes line knowing that they will be fresh and crisp on our bed tonight. The full enjoyment of many such moments are meditation to me as all else leaves my mind in peace…these are the moments that remind me to live in the moment.

“This too shall pass” was not a statement made for only the uncomfortable or difficult moments. It is also for those moments of pure joy that will pass onto the regular moments of life. When we get really good at living, there can be an incredible peace that hits us when we can relish the wonderfulness in the  moments we are living – as they are lived. Now that is perfection! I don’t expect to get to perfection, but life can feel perfect one moment at a time – maybe a couple of times in my day. For now that feels pretty perfect to me!

Have you ever put something off until later, and later never came?

Maybe you rationalized that it really could be done later, and then later becomes last minute.

Does procrastination seem like a destination?

A place you go when you don’t want to get something else done?

Have you turned procrastination into a science or event?

Each time you schedule in that “JOB” something “MORE IMPORTANT” must be done first.

When you put that “task” off do you feel justified somehow?

When you look back at the “deed” do you often feel like you were just being lazy?

Procrastination or laziness, which is it?

Does any of this sound vaguely familiar?

In the Wikipedia dictionary the meaning of these two words are this;

Laziness is disinclination to activity or exertion despite having the ability to do so. It is often used as a pejorative; related terms for a person seen to be lazy include couch potato and slacker.

Procrastination refers to the act of replacing high-priority actions with tasks of low-priority, and thus putting off important tasks to a later time… Procrastination may result in stress, a sense of guilt and crisis

Procrastination may come from different sources.

Fear is huge including the fears of success or failure. There are many things that could sit in wait keeping you afraid to act so be open to feelings to be sure fear is not the culprit.

Self doubt is another whopper.  The feeling that you can’t do it or won’t complete a project or time can keep us from ever starting. You may just have a sense that you just cannot!

How about confusion? Are you not sure where to start or which way to go or any number of dilemmas of indecision that leave you confused?

Are you completely overwhelmed by the task or life? You may be overwhelmed by just what you are putting off or maybe you are putting everything off!  EVERYTHING IS JUST TOO MUCH! (Sorry for the yelling…)

The biggest issue I can have with procrastination is that it can cause other pain. The creation of stress and guilt that regularly follows may affect our health so the benefits of just doing it far outweigh putting it off. We don’t know that when we are avoiding the item, not consciously anyway. If we were truly conscious we would think the whole thing through and just “get ‘er done!” It is faster than all the mental gymnastics involved in plotting and planning another possible time to look at it and potentially put it off, again. I say we as I know I am not alone in this.

So how do we cut out that darn procrastination for good? I figure the easiest way is the direct way. Ask some pretty direct questions.

Why am I putting ‘IT’ off? Be honest here!

How does that feel? No really, how does that really feel inside?

What are the benefits for putting it off? Write down as many as possible.

What would be the down side for putting it off?  Make the list full!

How does that feel?

What would be the benefits for completing it NOW?

How will I feel if it was completed? Make a full list!

Remember a time when a task was completed that was being put off?

How did it feel?

This is a terrific start but is not a complete list by any means. A Life Coach would assist you in digging deep to get to the source but you really can do this for yourself, I know you can! You are worth the effort to get to the bottom of this once and for all! I know you are- I am in your corner. You may have someone else in your corner that you can go through these questions with or just pull out a journal and start writing. Who knows what cool awareness you will unearth?  If you are reading this blog I am guessing you are interested in growth so this exercise may give you a revelation – a starting point.

The way I see this is you are worth any effort that you can take to make your life what you want. Life is much too short to spend any of it doing things you do not want to. If your job is not something you love, than start planning to do something you would love doing. Maybe you need an attitude adjustment or a job adjustment. The time and effort you spend procrastinating can be spent researching what your life purpose is or if you already know it, bringing it to fruition. You deserve to live in joy! What can make you joyful today?
